Early early-stage human trials human studies in the 1990s showed tanning and erectile effects in small cohorts; pharmaceutical development was discontinued around 2003 over non-selectivity and safety concerns. MT-II has never been approved anywhere and is sold on the grey market. Its approved relatives are different molecules: afamelanotide (Scenesse) and bremelanotide (PT-141).

The more serious flagged concerns are changes to existing moles and new pigmented spots, which is why mole monitoring is widely advised, and case reports link it to rarer events; strong unprotected sun exposure can still worsen burning.
