Early early-stage human trials human studies in the 1990s showed tanning and erectile effects in small cohorts; pharmaceutical development was discontinued around 2003 over non-selectivity and safety concerns. MT-II has never been approved anywhere and is sold on the grey market. Its approved relatives are different molecules: afamelanotide (Scenesse) and bremelanotide (PT-141).
About this peptide
Melanotan II is a synthetic version of the natural hormone alpha-MSH, best known in research for stimulating skin pigmentation (tanning), with early human work also on sexual function. Supplied as a freeze-dried powder for research use.
What it does
Researched mainly for skin tanning, where it stimulates the body's own pigment production so less sun exposure is needed to tan, and in early human work for libido and erectile function. The tanning crowd and some physique competitors explore it for a deeper tan ahead of summer or stage; a smaller group runs it for the libido angle. It is not an approved medicine and is sold on the grey market.
